One of the Largest Tragedies in Iowa History.
On January 7, 1950, a fire erupted at St. Elizabeth’s Mental Health Facility for women. The disaster garnered statewide and national attention as the second largest loss of life in the history of the state and the third largest hospital fire in the nation, to date. The fire, started by a patient, claimed the lives of forty patients and one nurse, while twenty-five patients were rescued. Rescue efforts were hampered by the fact that most patients were locked in their rooms at the time. Bret Grimes recounts the lives of those who fought and survived the ordeal.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase with time for the author to sign copies.

Paco Erhard: 5 Step Guide to Being German, presented by German American Heritage Center and Quad Cities Cultural Trust, is coming to the Adler Theatre on Saturday, March 29th at 7:30 PM.
Hard-hitting and hilarious, Paco Erhard shows you the real Germany behind the scenes. Experience hysterical dilemmas on the Autobahn, learn the truth about lederhosen, find out how the “no sense of humor” stereotype is both true and not true at all, and come to see: we Germans are not blunt or rude, we just value honestly more highly than other people’s feelings. Understand Germany better! Understand yourself better! And find out why Oma Hilda was always a bit weird.
Tickets start at $28. Tickets can be purchased through the Adler Theatre Box Office or on Ticketmaster: https://www.ticketmaster.com/paco-erhard-5step-guide-to-being-davenport-iowa-03-29-2025/event/06006226A78714D6?CAMEFROM=CFC_ADLER_OTHER_GAHC_GAHC-ALL

The Hope of Plants: Prints by Joseph Lappie is on view now until February 26th, 2025.
Herbs, flowers, vegetables, roots, and the occasional creature. This series couples the intentional carved marks of 15th century wood engravings with the bold shapes and composition of early 20th century expressionist woodcuts. The result is a hand-colored contemporary portrayal of personal herbology, or the assumed language of a plant and its individual meaning to a person.
Joseph Lappie is a professor and the chair of Art + Design at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He teaches book arts, drawing, papermaking, & printmaking and serves the regional community in arts-based demonstrations.

Happy Hanukkah!
Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is an eight-day Jewish festival celebrating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Revolt around 164 BCE. This year it falls on December 25th – January 2nd. It features the nightly lighting of the menorah, commemorating the miracle of oil that lasted eight days. The holiday includes special prayers, festive foods like latkes and sufganiyot, and games such as spinning the dreidel.
Today, the Jewish community in Germany is around 118,000. It is the fourth largest in Western Europe and the eighth largest in the world. The majority of Jews who currently reside in Germany were born in the former Soviet Union (USSR).
The United States has the world`s second-largest Jewish population after Israel, with around 7.5 million people.
