Hidden Labor: The Work that Sustained German Immigrant Families
November 21, 2026 – February 14, 2027
1st Floor

This exhibition explores the daily lives and labor of immigrant women, whose work was often overlooked even though it was essential to the success of families and communities across the Midwest.
Featuring textiles, household equipment, and other objects from our collection, this exhibition invites visitors to consider what kinds of work are often taken for granted, and why. We hope visitors will find parallels with their own families and recognize the value of the labor performed by mothers, grandmothers, and other ancestors. By looking closely at the work of mending, washing, sewing, and making do, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the people whose care and skill sustained everyday life.
