German heritage runs deep in New Ulm — two groups of German immigrants, one from Chicago and one from Cincinnati, arrived and founded New Ulm in 1855 and 1856. Early industries in New Ulm included manufacture of bricks, bread, beer, and cigars. Wanda Gág grew up in an artistic family in New Ulm and became nationally famous for writing and illustrating children’s books.
From folk music they brought from the old country, Whoopee John Wilfahrt and other local musicians produced old-time music to entertain listeners and dancers throughout the Midwest. For at least a century, children grew up in homes where the German language was spoken every day. New Ulm remembers its German heritage in titles of local businesses, monuments to its cultural heroes, and social organizations such as the New Ulm Turner Society.

Our Historic Summer Walking Tours kickoff this weekend! Our tours start downtown at our historic building and explore the homes and businesses of the German immigrants who lived and worked here. Learn their stories, explore history of Davenport, and appreciate the amazing architecture of the Gold Coast homes.
