We offer free admission during some special events throughout the year. Visit the museum free of charge on the following days:

First full weekend in January: Community Open House Weekend

Saturday before Easter weekend: Eiermarkt Spring Craft Fair

2nd full week of June: QC Museum Week

2nd Saturday of December: Christkindlmarkt Holiday Craft Fair

The GAHC&M participates in Blue Star Museums which provides free admission to active military and their immediate family members Armed Forces Day through Labor Day annually.

The GAHC&M is a proud member of Museums for All. We are happy to offer free admission to households (limit 4 people) who receive food assistance (SNAP benefits) and show their EBT card. Museums for All invites low-income visitors to feel welcome at cultural institutions.

Museums for All is an initiative of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal agency based in Washington, DC. The initiative is administered by the Association of Children’s Museums through a cooperative agreement with IMLS.

Did you know the origins of the Easter Bunny actually trace back to Germany? 🇩🇪 🐰

Yes—the Easter Bunny comes from the German tradition of the "Osterhase" - literally Easter hare. Stories differ, and the true origin of the Easter Bunny is not known but theories include many different ideas. One legend tells the story of the Duchess Rosilinda von Lindenberg. She fled her home with her children to hide from war in their area. They settled in a small village and the poor villagers shared what little they had. As a gift, she sent her servant to find chickens so that the villagers could have a supply of fresh eggs. Near Easter, the Duchess made the eggs extra special by boiling them with molasses and roots to give the shells a nice color. The children were so excited about these special treats, they wondered how a chicken could lay such lovely eggs. One girl responded and said, "oh no, it wasn't the hens, it must have been that little hare that sprang out of the juniper bush!" All the children laughed, agreed, and believed that it had to be the hare. The tradition spread and children began leaving "nests" out for the hare to fill with special eggs. This practice spread throughout Germany and was eventually brought to America in the 1700s when German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania. Now, the Easter Bunny is a part of American cultural traditions. 🐰 🐣

Our exhibition, “Sweet Treats: German Influence on the QC Candy Industry” is on display through May 19th, 2024. Here is a highlight from the exhibition about the German origins of the Haribo Gummy Bear (Gummibären). In 1920, a German confectioner Hans Riegel Sr., established a candy company called Haribo.

The origin of the company name is an abbreviation combining letters from his name and his hometown of Bonn (Hans Riegel Bonn). Working out of his kitchen with a copper pot, a rolling pin and a stove, Riegel started experimenting with his candy creations.

In 1922 Reigel introduced his gummy prototype, the dancing bear (Tanzbären). The Tanzbären’s shape was inspired by the real dancing bears that once entertained children at festivals across Europe.

In 1930, the company debuted a new slogan: “Haribo macht Kinder froh,” which translates to “Haribo makes children happy.” By the 1950s and 1960s, this brand was the first in Germany to do advertisements on television.
