German Iowa and the Global Midwest

From Oct 17- 29, the German American Heritage Center and Museum will host a traveling exhibit, “German Iowa and the Global Midwest.” The exhibit shows important facets of German Iowan history, such as immigration, communities, brewing and politics, using telling photographs and interpretation.

One third of Iowans claim German heritage, far more than any other ethnic group. Drawing on research by University of Iowa faculty and students, this new exhibit examines the lasting influence of German immigrants and their descendants in Iowa. As we mark the 100th anniversary of American entry to the First World War, the exhibit explores pro- and anti- immigration sentiment, bilingualism, and multiculturalism at the time of national emergency.
