INTERACTIVE PERMANENT EXHIBIT:
The German Immigrant Experience
This fascinating exhibit is a highly interactive, audiovisual and intergenerational experience. The exhibit begins at an era 2,000 years before Germany unified. Enjoy an interactive experience as you learn about immigrants’ journey by sea, train and foot, to their final destination at the German American Heritage Center building, which was originally a very busy hotel for thousands of immigrants in the 1860s. CURRENT SPECIAL EXHIBITS:
Amana Colonies: Moving to the City
Open March 5 through July 2010
We are excited to bring you this new exhibit in partnership with the Amana Colonies. Explore the skilled trades that members of the Amana communal society brought from Germany to Iowa. Artifacts and personal stories from descendants bring to life the specialized trades Amana members brought from Germany that are still performed today including blacksmithing, baking, butchering, weaving and more. In the exhibit, learn how Amana society members made a difficult decision to leave the communal society during the Great Depression to come to the City of Davenport. Learn more.
